Case Studies > Hyperdesmo > Fire Range Roofing Renewal, in Castlemartin, Wales

Project Description

Situated within Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, spanning over 6,000 acres the Castlemartin Firing Range has operated since 1938, this historical range is actively used for armoured fighting vehicles and tank training throughout the year. The site has numerous buildings and radar stations that have served critical functions over the decades. Many of these structures needed roof renewal, as the existing felt and asphalt systems had significantly exceeded their lifespan.

Project Requirements

The ageing roofing systems of several radar stations and buildings had become inefficient and no longer fit for purpose. Given the nature of the site, a robust, long-lasting waterproofing solution that could be applied quickly to minimise disruption was needed. The firing range operates continuously, making it essential to complete the project within a short timeframe to allow for uninterrupted training schedules.

ALCHIMICA® SOLUTIONS

After a thorough assessment of the site and its unique challenges, the Hyperdesmo® BBA-certified system was chosen for its fast-curing properties and exceptional durability. This advanced polyurethane-based system was ideal for Castlemartin’s requirements, enabling us to complete each roof within a single day, allowing full operational use of the buildings immediately after application.

The project commenced with two buildings, covering a total of 120m², with plans to extend the solution to additional structures over the coming years.

Surface Preparation

To ensure optimal adhesion, the roofs were first cleaned and small concrete repairs carried out.

Waterproofing System Installation
  • Hyperseal® sealants were used to address any cracks and joints, ensuring complete sealing. Followed by primer application.
  • Hyperdesmo® was applied as the main waterproofing membrane. This high-performance system offers outstanding elasticity and resistance to harsh environmental conditions, making it ideal for the coastal climate of Pembrokeshire.
  • Geotextile reinforcement was incorporated for additional strength, especially on high-stress areas prone to movement or expansion.
  • A finishing coat of Hyperdesmo® ADY-E was applied to enhance UV resistance and extend the lifespan of the waterproofing system.
Results and Future Plans

The completed work provided a seamless, durable and efficient roofing solution that aligned perfectly with the firing range’s operational needs. The fast-curing properties of the Hyperdesmo® system allowed the buildings to be back in use within two days, ensuring minimal disruption to the ongoing training exercises.

With this initial success, Castlemartin plans to extend the use of Alchimica’s Hyperdesmo® system to additional buildings across the site, ensuring long-term protection and sustainability for these historical structures.

Key Benefits Delivered
  • Fast Curing: Completion within 24 hours, allowing for a quick turnaround with minimal site disruption.
  • Durability: High resistance to extreme weather conditions, ideal for the coastal environment.
  • Seamless Application: Provided a fully waterproof, long-lasting membrane system.

By leveraging ALCHIMICA’s innovative waterproofing solutions, the Castlemartin Firing Range is now better equipped to withstand the demands of its intensive year-round use, preserving its historic structures for years to come.
